In the new “Close to the Bone” we find a not too distant (in relation to Albatre) idiomatic anchoring in the various aspects of rock, especially with regard to the work of the guitar, saturated in distortion and “feedback”. Unlike that band, however, the music is entirely improvised, "growing organically and spontaneously", as defined by themselves in terms of intention. There are "riffs" (that is, repetitions of rhythmic motifs), but the themes are looser and the sax has a lot of space to phrase - otherwise, in line with the more Mercurian free jazz. There are even times when we are referred by Costa to the “loft generation” of New York.
Above all, there is a greater diversity of approaches and intensities, just not being able to say that there is a place for contemplation because even the quietest and most subtle moments are marked by that kind of restlessness that requires active and alert hearing. The best arrives on the third track, with “Monkey Mind”, a riot of sound that comes with a focus and a glue that we would not think possible in such a context. For here is a record that has everything to do with these strange days of science fiction made reality brought by Covid-19. A catharsis disc (listen to “Scorchio”) that is not only made of expressive virulence, finding in the small elements also cause for discord and resolution.
